World Gym: Making the Most of Our Beautiful World

A friend mentioned the idea of a world gym the other day and our conversation got my wheels spinning. The concept of a world gym as it relates to voluntary simplicity is simple - if we view the natural world around us as our own personal gym, we might be more apt to get active and be happier as a result. It's all about a shift in perspective. Instead of complaining about not being able to find a close parking spot somewhere, challenge yourself to park as far away as possible from your destination, take a few deep breaths, and enjoy the benefits of a little sunshine and extra walking.

What do you think? How do you maintain your fitness by using the natural world around you as your gym? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below.

  1. This idea of a "world gym" really hit home for me. I was grinding it out 90 minutes a day, four times a week at the gym up until about 2 years ago. I realized one day that instead of leaving me energized, I was cranky and exhausted. My work-outs were making me a less effective mother, wife and friend because I waas cranky, tired, and caught up in a cycle of "shoulds." Now, we are in a new place and I have toyed with the idea of joining the gym. But every time I do, I seem to be greeted by a gorgeous day -- perfect for walking on the wooded trails near our house, shooting some baskets at the park or playing pick-up soccer with my kids. For now, this world gym is what works for me. Thanks for sharing!

  2. @ Anonymous - Thanks for commenting! I, too, am rediscovering the joy of exercising outside and taking advantage of all that nature has to offer. I haven't given up my gym membership yet, though.
